Important piece of information is that for the widening of a 44km long stretch of Chennai –Tirupati National Highway or NH 716 from Tiruvallur to TN-AP border, tenders have been called for.

The cost of the project would be about Rs 750 cr and it would be taken up on a design, build, operate and transfer or hybrid annuity basis. It is noteworthy that the present 2 lane wide road would be widened to 4 lanes with paved shoulders on either side on completion of the project. Information is that a total of 20 underpasses have been proposed to be constructed at major junctions.

It was explained by an officer from NHAI that since much of the work would be at an elevation there would not be any need for land acquisition. He mentioned that notices have been issued to those persons regarding encroachments in the space.

It is now said that alongside the road the concessionaire would provide a utility corridor, unpaved drain, unpaved shoulder for 1.5m width and space for recovery. The median would be 4m in width and shrubs/saplings would be placed. The safety of road users would be considered.

On the Chennai-Tirupati road, the potholes have been fixed now and the stretch has become better now. This was mentioned by Mr. P. Nandhagopal, Freedom Travels. He was of the view that the Chennai Tirupati NH must not be compared to Chennai- Trichy road or to OMR etc.
