The Railway Board or RB has allocated two 12car AC Electric Multiple Unit or EMU rakes to the Southern Railways or SR. It is now mentioned that the train passengers in Chennai would be able to travel on air-conditioned suburban trains in the Chennai Beach- Chengalpet section.
Information is that out of a total of 8 AC EMUs manufactured by ICF, two have been designated specifically for the SR. Soon, these would be introduced on the above said important route.
In 2023-24, the first rake is scheduled for delivery and in the subsequent year the second rake is scheduled for delivery. The demand for AC local trains in the route has been studied by the TN govt. This was mentioned by some official sources. The TN govt had conducted a study to assess the demand for air-conditioned local trains in the route.
The sources later explained that a dedicated infrastructure for the maintenance of AC EMU rake needs to be developed either at Tambaram or at Avadi EMU sheds. Point to be noted is that similar rakes are already in operation in Mumbai.
