There was very heavy rainfall yesterday in some places in the northern part of TN. This is now record breaking rainfall recorded in a single day in January month.

The RMC in Chennai is of the view that rains might start shifting towards south TN on Tuesday, 9th January 2024. On Monday morning, Puducherry received its highest 24 hr rainfall of about 13cms. On 4th January 1985, previously highest single day rainfall was recorded in Puducherry.

The sensational piece of information is that in the last 101 years Nagapattinam recorded its second highest single day rainfall of 21cms on Monday. On 13th January 1923, Nagapattinam received its highest ever single day rainfall of 24.5cms.

On 12th January 1067, Cuddalore recorded its highest ever single day January rainfall of19.7cms and now on Monday Cuddalore recorded its second highest ever January rainfall in a single day of 13.6cms. This was as per the RMC data.

It was confirmed by RMC that there would be scattered rainfall in the southern parts of TN. Till 11th January, heavy rains would be concentrated over Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram districts etc. The rainfall across TN was due to trough in easterlies from south Sri Lanka to north coastal part of TN plus due to another system in the Arabian Sea.

It was revealed by Mr. S. Balachandran, additional DDG Meteorology in Chennai that a combination of global weather parameters and local conditions had sustained NE monsoon conditions in January also. He spoke about how the rains would decrease from 14th January onwards in TN. Point is that heavy rains are not uncommon in the early part of January in TN. Till Wednesday, Chennai would receive light to moderate rains in some places. Until the wet spell gets over, most places across north TN might miss the morning spell.
