For the second phase of the metro rail project, CMRL has planned to demolish a part of the flyover present at Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai in Chennai. It is known that in Chennai metro phase 2 works are being implemented for 116.1km in 3 routes. Out of these 3 routes, one route between Madhavaram and SIPCOT in Siruseri would pass through Royapettah. This portion would be underground and metro stations would be built underground in places like Dr. Radhakrishnan Road, Mylapore, Madaveli etc.
It is noteworthy that a grand metro station would be constructed at Thirumayilai where 3rd and 5th lines would meet. The traffic in these places has been diverted already and construction work has started. The metro station at Thirumayilai would be constructed 15m to 18m below the land. Point to be noted is that the inbound tracks and outbound tracks are located at the intersection of Royapettah highway and Dr Radhakrishnan Road.
By the end of January month, a portion of flyover that is obstructing the construction works would be demolished. Once the tunnel work gets completed, the demolished portion of the flyover would be constructed again and this was mentioned by some officers from CMRL.
