At one of its sites on the busy Old Mahabalipuram Road in Chennai as a part of construction of phase-2 project, CMRL launched a 30m U girder on Wednesday.
It is noteworthy that the phase-2 project belonging to CMRL covers a long stretch on OMR in the corridor 3 Madhavaram to SIPCOT SIruseri through Sholinganallur. From Madhavaram to Taramani, CMRL has planned the corridor as an underground one and from Taramani to SIPCOT Siruseri the corridor becomes elevated.
For the last few months, the construction of an elevated stretch has been going on between Taramani and SIPCOT is well known to us. Now, as a part of viaduct construction, the U girder has been placed in OMR.
Longest span launched:
It is now brought to light that this 30m long U girder is the longest span launched here till now. Point is that it was done for constructing the viaduct in OMR. It is learnt that the girder was launched with the help of an advanced puller axle system for transportation and erection at a height of 20m between (Okkiyampet and Karapakkam) along OMR. This was explained in the press release from CMRL,
The company L & T has been carrying out construction at a location where U girder has been placed in the stretch from Nehru Nagar to Sholinganallur. Information collected is that this puller axle is a specially fabricated trailer made with 12 axles each with 8tyres of a total of 96 tyres.
The press release from CMRL concluded that the entire process marks the historic milestone in the Indian metro construction landscape.
