On Sunday, 14th of January 2024, Bhogi festival will be celebrated. Normally, during the bhogi festival the public would burn all the waste items etc. This would lead to severe smog plus air pollution.
Now, the AAI or Airport Authority of India has made an appeal to the residents living near the Chennai airport. The AAI has asked the people not to burn bonfires on the bhogi day on 14th January as it would lead to smog and impact flights etc.
It was brought out by a statement from AAI that as a precautionary measure to avoid any flight disruptions, the public (staying in the proximity of the airport) have been requested not to burn any waste materials etc which could create thick smoke during bhogi.
It must be recalled that in January 2018 on the occasion of the bhogi festival, many flights were disrupted due to poor visibility due to heavy smog. It is shocking to note that around 45 arrivals and 73 departures were affected in January 2018 due to heavy smog caused by burning of waste etc.
Since then, the airport authorities have started creating awareness programmes near this important festival every year.
