Whenever there is maintenance work or when the nearby source turns dry, the water supply facility is closed down and the residents of Chennai manage without water or with less water. This would change soon!!

The news that has come out now is that CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board or Metro Water Board has got plans to set up a ring main system or circular pipeline connecting all its water sources with the distribution points. A mammoth amount of Rs 20005 cr would be spent for this. The main aim of this would be to ensure equitable distribution of water.

For a length of nearly 94.45km in Chennai, covering 426sqkm of GCC, the large pipeline having diameter of 1mto 1.8m would be present. It is said that water from 6 major sources including water treatment and desal plants etc would be pumped and fed into the ring main. The water would be sent to 11 distribution points by the circular pipeline. From these distribution points, water would be sent to consumers through other existing transmission lines.

Once when the ring main system is established, water could be transferred across any area and from any water source. It is brought out that Thiruvottiyur and Manali zones might be supplied with water from the Nemmeli desalinated water or Veeranam tank with enough pressure.

Shah Technical Consultants have prepared the detailed feasibility report vetted by IIT-M. It is now said that a detailed project report would get ready by February or March.
