For the majority of us, the day would not be complete without eating rice isn`t it!!

Rice has become part and parcel of our lives especially in the southern part of India. It is really shocking to note that in the last 4 months alone the price of rice has gone up by Rs 17 per kilo in Chennai. This has been due to the shortage in the supply of rice. It is now said that the price of rice might go even further if the demand- supply gap is not bridged.

According to Mr. R. Puniappan, secretary of Koyambedu Food and Grains Wholesale Market, it was confirmed that the prices of various varieties of rice have been going up in the last 4 to 5 months. He blamed that the price of rice has been increasing due to low supply and low yield etc. Another reason for the increase in the rice price would be due to export. Information gathered is that the price of pre-boiled rice ranges from Rs 60 to Rs 68 per kg now.

Mr. Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of Federation of Farmers Associations of Cauvery and Delta Districts spoke his heart out. He mentioned that because of poor monsoon a field that once had 1800kg to 2100kg yield now produces less than 1500kg in the first and second crop. He hinted that climate change would also result in low yield.

There is now a huge difference in the wholesale and retail prices in rice varieties. It is worth mentioning that Sivaji brand rice is being sold for Rs 68 per kg but in the retail market it is being sold for Rs 80 per kg. The low yield of paddy in states like AP, Karnataka etc has led to a surge in the price of rice varieties. This was mentioned by Mr. R. Puniappan.
