A tender has been issued by The Metropolitan Transport Corporation or MTC to operate 500 electric buses in Chennai.
It is known that MTC daily operates 3436 buses on as many as 659 routes. It must be taken into account that 33.60lak people travel in these buses handled by 32 depots in the city.
The demand for the buses has become more now in Chennai. A new bus terminus has been opened at Kilambakkam in south Chennai. The situation now is that additional buses have to be operated daily from suburban localities including Chennai. In this crucial situation, MTC has been taking many measures like buying additional buses, giving permission to run private buses under MTC etc.
It is known that MTC has decided to buy electric buses and already a tender was called for 100 electric buses in the first phase. Currently, MTC has decided to purchase an additional 500 electric buses and a tender has been called for.
