The presence of several diversions and closures etc in Chennai is making the lives of the residents really difficult now. The reason for these diversions and closures is mainly due to the metro rail works that have been going on in the city.
It is worthy to note that the commuters who travel on the Loop Road near Marina Beach were unhappy as vehicles were diverted onto this stretch over a month ago. There are fish markets and food stalls present on both sides of the road and this has increased the issues of the commuters.
To decongest the traffic here, the commuters have been asking GCC to hasten the construction of the fish market. After the Santhome High Road was made one way last month due to metro construction works, all the MTC buses etc were diverted on the loop Road only. As a result, there has been heavy traffic congestion even during the non peak hours. Point is that the fish vendors have occupied both sides of the road and this has been creating problems for the commuters. The illegal installation of tents for the customers by the eateries on the footpaths here has been an issue.
It is important to mention that during the weekends as many throng the Marina Beach commuting has become very tough here. Many commuters are confused regarding why the fish market construction has been going at snail`s pace here despite the construction involving steel fabrication works only.
It was brought out by a senior officer from Chennai Corporation that once the amount of Rs 4cr gets released then remaining works like compound wall construction, toilets etc would be completed. He added that the fish market would be opened by the month of May. He concluded that rent and other charges etc were not yet decided.
