To promote handloom and handicraft products made by weavers from TN, the state govt has decided to build a mega mall in Egmore. For many years, Co-optex or TN Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society has been remaining on the margin is well known to us.
At an estimated cost of Rs 227 cr, Unity Mall would be coming up at Egmore Co-optex premises. This was as per some sources. To construct a 9 storey building here, Co-optex has applied for environmental clearance. At a total area of 4.66 lakh sq m in Egmore, this Unity Mall from Co-optex would be coming up and this was brought out by an officer.
In another 2 years, the construction of the building would be completed. Tenders have been called already and model code of conduct has come into effect. After 4th of June, tender works would begin
Handloom weavers would be able to sell their products directly to the customers once the Unity Mall opens. Moreover, the weavers would also be able to showcase their products to many foreigners who come to Chennai. Under the government`s One District One Product or ODOP scheme, this mall would be constructed.
