This is an amazing piece of news for the pilots at the Chennai airport!!
The AAI or Airport Authority of India is having plans to install modern b brighter and safer approach lights at the Guindy end of the main runway. This would make the work of the pilots flying to Chennai airport easier in the future.
After removing the old type distance coded approach lighting system, a new barrette cat -1 approach lighting system would be implemented at the airport. This new lighting system would have closely installed lights and it would give the pilots a view of a bright band. There would be safer landings at the Chennai airport.
In all major airports across India, the Barrette cat-1 approach lighting system is being used. Here, closely placed LED lights would appear like a bar of light for atleast 3m in length for pilots. It is worth noting that this type of lighting would help the pilots to align the plane with the runway in all types of weather. This type of lighting would cost Rs 5.4cr in 4 months after the work is awarded.
As per an officer from AAI at the Chennai airport it was clear that the present lighting has been installed for a distance of 510m but the new lighting would be installed for 780m from the threshold of the runway on the land. Point is that this land would be taken for lease from the OTA or Officers Training Academy.
