The contagious infection mumps has come back once again in Chennai and in Tamil Nadu but there is no need to worry about that. From January onwards, cases of mumps have surfaced and the cases have increased in the last 2 to 3 months. It was brought out by the Public Health Dept that the public need not panic regarding mumps. As per the doctors, patients with mumps must seek medical help without fail.
It was brought to light by Dr. T. Selvavinayagam, DPHPM mumps cases surfaced in January and touched 500 during March-April months. He added that the cases have reduced to less than 200 now and in the coming days the cases would go down further.
Medical director of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital in Nungambakkam, Dr. Janani Shankar expressed her thoughts. She spoke about how there were many mumps cases during March-April months and how the cases reduced in May. It is noteworthy that this hospital witnessed atleast 100 outpatients and 20 kids needed hospitalisation. She concluded that the government now has only measles – rubella or MR vaccine in the UIP and not the previous MMR or measles mumps and rubella vaccine.
