Helmet Absence Linked to One-Third of Two-Wheeler Deaths in Tamil Nadu in 2023

In 2023, one-third of two-wheeler fatalities in Tamil Nadu were due to riders and pillion riders not wearing helmets, according to the State Crime Record Bureau. 

The state saw a total of 8,113 two-wheeler deaths, comprising 44% of the 18,347 total road accident fatalities. Of these, 2,426 deaths (29%) were due to the absence of helmets. While overall two-wheeler deaths increased by 6% from 7,626 in 2022, fatalities from not wearing helmets slightly decreased from 2,477 in 2022 to 2,426 in 2023. 

Tiruvallur reported the highest number of such deaths (157), followed by Coimbatore (155), Chengalpattu (142), Madurai (116), and Krishnagiri (107).
