In response to the growing demand, the State government has decided to increase the number of seats in all Arts and Science colleges, benefiting over 50,000 undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students this year.

On Monday, Minister of Higher Education K. Ponmudy announced that starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, the admission capacity in these colleges will be expanded by 20% due to higher pass rates among Class 12 students. The seat increase will be distributed as follows: a 20% increase in government colleges, a 15% increase in government-aided institutions, and a 10% increase in self-financing colleges.

A senior official from the Directorate of Collegiate Education noted that there are currently 1,626 operational Arts and Science colleges across the State, including government, government-aided, and self-financing institutions. This year, more than 2.11 lakh students have applied online for government colleges alone, with the total intake capacity across all colleges approaching 4.9 lakh.

The introduction of online registration has streamlined the application process, allowing students to apply to their preferred colleges without extensive travel. With the increased seat capacity, admissions will be based on merit. A circular detailing this change will be issued to colleges shortly.

Last year, approximately 4.96 lakh students were admitted to Arts and Science colleges throughout the State. This number is expected to rise to 5.4 lakh this year.
