In this month, the proposed second airport is likely to get clearance

It is known to us that the TN govt has planned to construct a second airport at Parandur near Chennai at a cost of Rs 32704.92 crores. Fact is that this upcoming airport would have a capacity to handle about 100million passengers.

As per a senior officer from the TN govt it was clear that site clearance would be obtained in a month and would get NOC from various departments in about 6 months. He hinted that land acquisition details would be posted mentioning all the survey numbers etc by July-August.

Point to be noted here is that site clearance would be the first major approval that the state govt must receive to expedite the setting up of a second airport.

Next week,  the steering committee comprising members from the Dept of Civil Aviation, Home Ministry, Defence Ministry. Dept of Economic Affairs, Airport Authority of India, Directorate General of Civil Aviation etc might meet. Once the committee gives approval for the project then it would be sent to the minister of civil aviation. It was brought out by another source that final approval might come through this month of July.

It must be remembered that in January 2023 itself the application for site clearance for the Parandur airport was sent. Later on, a number of queries were raised by the minister of civil aviation last year. Point is that the queries related to Obstacle Limitation Surface or OLS survey have been answered and there is no issue at present.

Information gathered is that after the Parandur airport gets the site clearance then TIDCO would have to apply for the project clearance. The sources have confirmed that project clearance would be an elaborate process and it would take more time for approval.
