Despite initial delays, the double-decker Metro construction for Corridor 4 in Chennai is progressing swiftly. This project, managed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and L&T, marks India`s first double-decker Metro with both lines supported on the same pier.
The 5 km stretch will feature four stations-Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam-each developed at two levels with a common concourse and island platforms.
Significant progress includes the completion of 99% of piling and 78% of pile cap work. The 3.75 km elevated corridor, which merges with Corridor 5 at pier 110 and de-merges at pier 242, has seen rapid construction despite challenges in design and space.
To erect U-girders, launching girders (LG) were used due to space constraints, successfully completing 13 spans. Officials report that 27 spans on both levels of the double-decker corridor are ready for U-girder installation.
Construction at various stations is also advancing well. In Alapakkam, 11 piers have been installed, while Karambakkam has completed concourse level piers. Valasaravakkam and Alwarthirunagar stations are seeing ongoing pier work. Entry and exit works, including underground sump-and-pump rooms, are progressing at all stations.
