Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has decided to relocate its third depot for Phase II from Siruseri SIPCOT to Semmanchery. The decision comes as CMRL officials have completed the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and are preparing tender documents. The Tamil Nadu government will fund the project.

The new depot at Semmanchery will occupy a substantial government land area, currently under evaluation for suitability. Once funding is secured and the tender process finalized, the construction of the depot is expected to take approximately two and a half years. Additionally, the Semmanchery site will also be utilized for property development.

Stabling lines for parking four trains consisting of six coaches each will still be established at SIPCOT as part of CMRL`s Phase II plans. Currently, CMRL is concurrently developing depots for Corridor 4 at Poonamallee and Corridor 5 at Madhavaram. Depots for Corridors 1 and 2 are already operational at Koyambedu and Wimco Nagar respectively.
