Crop damage and transport problems have been cited as the reasons now for the increase in the prices of certain vegetables in the Koyambedu market in Chennai.

Point is that the prices of vegetables like onions, shallots, tomatoes, drumsticks, carrots and beetroots have increased now.  As per some traders in the market, intense rainfall would further increase the prices of vegetables. The traders have added that otherwise the prices of vegetables would remain stable.

In the month of May, the second crop cultivation began and more quantities of vegetables were supplied to the market. Point is that the number of truck loads increased from 450 per day to 500 to 550 per day recently. As a result, the prices of commodity vegetables like beans, broad beans, ladies finger etc got reduced.

The crops were damaged and production got affected due to the intermittent rains in Mumbai, AP and Karnataka etc. Truth is that the transportation issue worsened the situation resulting in shooting up prices of vegetables like onion, carrots, beetroots, shallots, tomatoes etc. This was according to Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association.

The prices of tomatoes increased to Rs 50 per kg from Rs 30 per kg. Onions went to Rs 40 per kg, drumsticks to Rs 100 per kg, carrots Rs 80 per kg, beetroot Rs 40 per kg. Till last week beans were sold for Rs 100 per kg and now it has reduced to Rs 70 per kg. In the same manner, ladies finger is now sold for Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg, broad beans for Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg and brinjal Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg.

It is noteworthy that the retail rates of vegetables like tomatoes, onions and potatoes etc have witnessed marginal rise by Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kg. It was explained by a retail vendor from New Washermenpet in north Chennai that to avoid vegetable waste the commodities are being sold at wholesale price. He added that from the next week supply would be increased and due to this prices would reduce drastically.
