The previous contractor Toorq Media Services has been relieved and new contractor Texco or Tamil Nadu Ex Servicemen Corporation would be taking charge. Guess what we are talking about now?
This is regarding parking contractors for street parking in Chennai. It must be noted that the previous contractor Toorq Media services has been relieved from work as they were over charging the customers. It is important to note that in Chennai there are more than 14000 street parking facilities and the new contractor would be managing these from now on.
The staff from Texco would receive minimal daily wages and they would be monitored by the Revenue dept of Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC.
According to an official from GCC, the parking charges would remain the same that is Rs 5 per hour for bikes and Rs 20 per hour for cars. It is now sad that GCC wants to receive revenue directly and not from a contractor giving royalty from the revenue.
Against a target of Rs 11lakh per day, the previous contractor for street parking could generate just Rs 1 lakh per day due to their shoddy enforcement. The bitter fact is that the parking slots were encroached upon permanently parked trucks, lorries and food stalls etc.
For the next few months, Texco would handle the parking in Chennai and GCC would associate with CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority. Information is that this association would be developing an integrated policy including towing and fining powers. Now, GCC has more enforcement authority and that is mainly because of the new urban local body rules 2023.
Chennai to be divided into 3 zones:
It was later explained by Mr. Mahesh Kumar, deputy Mayor, Chennai that there were plans to divide Chennai into 3 zones each zone managed by different contractors. He hinted that the new contractor would map the parking slots and come up with a fresh revenue model. On the basis of performance, payment would be done. Just similar to Bengaluru, an automated ticketing system might be implemented by the GCC in Chennai. This would allow the people to park their vehicles and get their own tickets.
