As the law enforcement agencies become more vigilant, the cybercriminals have changed their methods to cheat the public and steal their hard earned money.
In the past, we might have come across various methods that are used by cybercriminals like sending fake links through calls, messages and cheating the users and stealing their hard earned money.
Recently, cybercriminals have stolen money from the public even without sending fake links through messages or calls etc. Shocking right!
It is learnt that the hackers are stealing money from the users with the help of AePS or aadhar card enabled payment. Information is that AePS is a service launched by the Indian government for the sake of the public.
What is AePS?
It is noteworthy that AePS allows the users to withdraw money from the bank accounts by using Aadhaar card and biometrics etc. It would be possible for the users to withdraw money even without a chequebook or ATM card by this AePS. This would be possible if the user`s bank accounts are linked with Aadhaar cards and enabled for AePS. For these kinds of transactions, the RBI has set certain limitations.
How do cybercriminals commit frauds?
Here, as the first step the cybercriminals get their hands on the land allotted documents (having fingerprints) from government`s offices. In the next step, the cybercriminals steal the fingerprints for the biometric verification process. With the help of Aadhar card number and biometrics details etc, the cybercriminals then withdraw money easily from the bank.
How to prevent this type of fraud?
In order to prevent this kind of fraud, the users must never share their Aadhar number with anyone. Masked Aadhar cards can be used if a person wants to share their Aadhar card. Here, the Aadhar card number would not be visible to others. Virtual ID or VID can be shared instead of Aadhar card number.
The users can go to UIDAI website to create masked Aadhar and VID and by this the users would be able to secure their Aadhar card numbers. Aadhar card number of the users would be protected when they enter their Aadhar number and mobile number details.
