After 31st of August till December, there would not be any fresh road cuts in Chennai city. This was according to GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran.
It is well known that Chennai has about 5000 roads that were dug up for the sake of civic works. It is learnt that the prohibition on the fresh road cuts in Chennai would be there until December when NE monsoon would come to an end.
The GCC Commissioner has asked the service departments not to do any more road cuts in Chennai after 31st August and instructed them to complete the ongoing works fast. It must be taken into account that rainfall could start next month onwards again and new road cuts would not be allowed. The staff of GCC have been instructed to relay finished road cuts within 15 days.
Yesterday, Chennai Mayor R. Priya made her presence felt at places where the civic works have been going on. She has given instructions to expedite the current SWD works in places where the pits are still open. Mayor Priya then inspected the Velachery based Veerangal Odai where the restoration works have been going on. To fix road cuts in about 50 roads in Chennai, GCC has floated a tender now.
