If you are a regular beach goer in Chennai, then don`t get surprised when you come across beach marshals driving ATVs!!
It is learnt that from the middle of August, beach marshals would be seen riding Sportsman Touring 570 All terrain Vehicles or ATVs on the Marina Beach, Elliot`s Beach sands to enforce and monitor garbage dumping and illegal encroachments etc. For this, GCC would be procuring 3 ATVs for Rs 12 lakhs each. This would be under GCC intensive encroachment removal drive.
As many as 50 encroachments from Besant Nagar beach and as many as 40 squatters from Pondy Bazaar Road were removed on Saturday by the officials of GCC.
It was brought out by GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran that the vehicles were already in use by the Chennai police dept and by coast guard dept. He explained that ATVs have been procured mainly to make sure that the encroachments don`t come back after removal and to enforce solid waste management. It is now mentioned that GCC would be hiring 3 marshals or diverting 3 in-house personnel to drive these ATVs. Now, the ATVs are present in a showroom at Sholinganallur.
