Latest important news about setting up sponge parks in Chennai to prevent floods!!

There is some good news for the Chennai residents now!!
The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC would set up sponge parks in many parks belonging to 11 zones. The main objective behind this would be to avoid floods in the nearby areas and to help recharge groundwater. At an estimated cost of Rs 7.9lakhs, the project would be carried out in 5 packages.
It is worthy to mention here that sponge parks would be beneficial in the low lying places in Chennai and they have ability to collect and store water during heavy rains. As a result, inundation would be prevented and groundwater level would be recharged.
Under package One:
In atleast 8 Wards belonging to Manali, Tondiarpet and Royapuram of zones 2, 4 and 5 respectively, an estimated amount of Rs 1.95 lakhs would be spent on the formation of sponge parks plus for the construction of motor rooms at several parks. It is said that the work would be carried out under package one.
Under package two:
Under the package two, the parks dept of GCC would set up sponge parks in 4 zones like Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam etc. An estimated amount of Rs 1.44lakhs has been allotted for this.
Under package three:
Under package three, at an estimated cost of Rs 90000, sponge parks would be set up in Valasaravakkam and Alandur zones.
Under package four:
It is learnt that under package four at an estimated cost of Rs 1.66lakhs sponge parks would be set up in Sholinganallur in south Chennai.
Under package five:
At the Ranga Avenue in Madhavaram of zone 3, sponge parks would be set up by the GCC under package four. It was also mentioned that an eco-park would be set up on OSR Land at Manickam Pillai Street, Mannurpet in Ambattur and an amount of Rs 1.95lakhs would be spent for this.
