Chennai`s Phase 2 Metro Rail corridor will soon feature driverless trains. Sixty-two driverless trains are under production in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The first three-car driverless train is expected to arrive at the Poonamallee workshop in September and will begin service on the elevated track between Poonamallee and Kodambakkam Power House.
These trains will be fully air-conditioned, with spaces for women and people with disabilities, and can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers at a speed of 80 km/h. Equipped with advanced control systems, the trains will also offer mobile phone and laptop charging facilities. Test runs are scheduled for the end of this year.
