A shocker for the residents belonging to the cities such as Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Thoothukudi!!
From the study conducted by CSTEP or Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy it was clear that the PM2.5 emissions would increase by 16% to 27% by the year 2030 in cities like Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Thoothukudi. This could be due to the absence of emission control measures.
There are many heavy industries within the city limits in Thoothukudi and this city showed highest PM2.5 emissions when compared to other 3 cities. While the industries have led to 97% of PM 2.5 emissions in Thoothukudi, the transportation sector contributed to an increase in the PM 2.5 emissions in cities like Chennai, Madurai and Trichy.
It must be taken into account that the airports present in cities like Chennai and Madurai etc have contributed to 1.4percent each to PM 2.5 emissions in these cities. Less than 1percent of emissions have been due to marine ports present in Chennai and Thoothukudi. The PM2.5 emissions might increase by 27% by 2030 in Chennai, 25% in Trichy, 20% in Madurai and 16% in Thoothukudi and this would be under the business as usual scenario or BAU.
