The wholesale price of onions has surged to Rs 50-55 per kilogram in Chennai`s markets, while retail prices have reached Rs 60-70 per kilogram. This increase is due to a significant drop in supply from Nasik, where heavy rainfall has damaged crops and disrupted transportation.
The Koyambedu Wholesale Market, which typically receives around 100 truckloads of onions daily, has recently seen only 50-60 trucks. According to P Sukumaran, treasurer of the Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association, prices are expected to stabilize within the next two weeks, assuming the weather improves.
Small onions have also seen a price increase, with wholesale prices at Rs 80 per kilogram and retail prices at Rs 100 per kilogram.
Other vegetables are also experiencing price hikes: carrots at Rs 80-90 per kilogram, broad beans at Rs 60-70, and peas at Rs 200 per kilogram. Despite the higher prices, demand for vegetables remains steady in Chennai.
