The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted above-normal rainfall for regions along the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu over the next two days due to a trough over the sea. An offshore trough from south Gujarat to central Kerala is expected to bring rain to these areas until August 29.
While rainfall in some Western Ghats areas may be near-normal to above-normal, the rest of Tamil Nadu is likely to receive light to moderate rain, with below-normal levels anticipated. In Chennai and its suburbs, mild showers and thunderstorms are forecasted for the evenings and nights over the next two days, with partly cloudy skies during the day and a maximum temperature of around 35°C.
Fishermen are advised to avoid going out to sea until August 31 due to squally weather, with winds of 35-45 km/h and gusts up to 55 km/h expected over the Gulf of Mannar, the south Tamil Nadu coast, and the Comorin area.
Since the onset of the southwest monsoon, Tamil Nadu has received 334 mm of rainfall, which is 68% above the average of 198 mm. Tirunelveli has recorded the highest excess rainfall at 426%. A low-pressure area is expected to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal on August 29, likely moving west-northwest towards the south Odisha and north Andhra coasts in the following two days.
