The Tamil Nadu State Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department has announced the upgrade of Pudukottai, Namakkal, Karaikudi, and Tiruvannamalai to municipal corporations by merging nearby local bodies. This follows an announcement by Minister KN Nehru in March 2023.

Karaikudi will now include Kandanur and Kottaiyur town panchayats and five village panchayats. Tiruvannamalai will merge with 18 village panchayats, Pudukkottai with 12, and Namakkal with 12. The changes came into effect on August 12, 2024, and the new corporation wards will be defined for the upcoming elections.

With this upgrade, Tamil Nadu now has 25 municipal corporations. The state`s move to upgrade local bodies is based on an increase in the urban population, estimated to be around 53% according to state government estimates, up from 48.45% in the 2011 census.
