The Tamil Nadu government has created a new taluk with Kolathur as its headquarters by bifurcating the Ayanavaram taluk in Chennai. This new Kolathur taluk aims to make access to essential services like social security pensions, revenue documents, and various certificates more convenient for residents.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the new taluk office in G.K.M. Colony on Monday, with plans to move to a permanent building on Paper Mills Road soon. With the addition of Kolathur, Chennai now has 17 taluks.
According to a government order, the new Kolathur taluk will include the revenue villages of Kolathur, Siruvallur, and Peravallur, while Ayanavaram taluk will retain Konnur, Malligmaicheri, Ayanavaram, and Chinnasembarambakkam. The new taluk will fall under the Central Chennai Revenue Division and the Kolathur assembly constituency.
The government has sanctioned 42 posts for Kolathur taluk, including tahsildars, deputy tahsildars, and revenue inspectors. Officials have already taken charge, and the segregation of old-age pensioners in Kolathur taluk has begun.
This move follows a similar expansion in January 2018 when the previous AIADMK regime added several taluks from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts to Chennai.
