On Thursday, the Chennai Corporation resolved to cover two-thirds of the costs for rehabilitating 114 families from Kannappar Thidal, whose shelter building had deteriorated over time. The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) plans to relocate these families to new housing in Moolakothalam, with biometric processing already complete.
The relocation stems from a 2021 census identifying 115 families living in the ‘Home for the Homeless’ shelter. In July 2023, residents were advised to secure loans for their share of the costs, set at Rs 4.27 lakh per house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Housing for All (PMAY-HFA/AHP) scheme.
Due to financial difficulties, families protested and demanded free housing. The Chennai Corporation has now agreed to subsidize two-thirds of the amount. Long-term loans will be arranged through a nationalized bank to make the EMIs affordable, with coordination by the RDC (North).
