The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) is introducing pelican crossings at traffic junctions across the city to enhance pedestrian safety.
As a trial run, four pelican crossings have been installed along Poonamallee High Road (EVR Periyar Salai). These `Pedestrian Light Controlled` crossings, already in use worldwide and in Coimbatore, allow pedestrians to press a button to turn the traffic signal red, enabling them to cross safely.
A senior GCTP officer stated that more than 50 junctions in Chennai will soon have pelican signals. Unlike fixed-timing manual signals, these crossings will adjust based on real-time traffic flow, benefiting the elderly and disabled.
