There are so many talented swimmers in this Kolathur locality in Chennai and this was mentioned by Saritha Maheshkumar, ward 69 councillor. She explained that there were many private swimming pools in Kolathur but economically poor sections would not be able to afford those. It is learnt that initially the plan was just to have a boxing stadium but GCC has been constructing one in the same locality. Later, the construction of a badminton court and swimming pool were accepted by Mr. Udayanidhi Stalin, sports minister.
The residents of Kolathur spoke about how for the swimming classes the kids would have to go far to places like Mogappair and Shenoy Nagar etc. Swimming facility if available at Kolathur itself would be a huge boost for the residents. According to a resident, this latest facility would make sports accessible for all because the private badminton courts are costly.
It was brought out by the CMDA minister Me. Sekar Babu that the project was the part of broader initiative by the CM to make each constituency self-sufficient.
