The Chennai-Tada Highway or Old NH5 or New NH 16 is highly accident prone is a known fact. It was brought to light by the state crime records bureau that along this 45km highway more than 100 accidents have been recorded annually.

It is worthy to note that these accidents involved heavy trucks, goods vehicles and many interstate buses etc. The various accident prone spots on this 45km highway are Sholavaram junction, Kavapettai, Sipcot, Panjetti- Arambakkam stretch etc. In recent times, there have been accidents involving two wheelers at 9 narrow traffic bottlenecks.

Now, the news is that NHAI or National highways Authority of India has decided to undertake rectification measures on a temporary basis. These would be carried out on the 9 accident prone spots on this important highway.

It is learnt that many measures like small road repairs, realignment works, installation of metal crash barriers along the sides to prevent vehicles from turning their directions etc would be carried out by NHAI. It was confirmed by an official from NHAI that cat eyes, rumble strips, and retro reflective cautionary sign boards would be installed.

It was mentioned by some officials from NHAI that concrete barriers would be constructed at road edges, approaches to bridge structures and medians to avoid overtakes by the two wheelers. Point is that 10km between Red Hills and Madhavarm is being milled and re-laid to improve road safety. This road stretch between Red Hills and Madhavaram is usually heavily populated and the residents here use their bikes for their commute creating traffic congestion.
