Heavy rains on Wednesday night caused significant disruption in Chennai, flooding areas like Poonamallee High Road, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Nungambakkam, and K K Nagar. Traffic was severely affected on Thursday morning due to waterlogged streets.
In the Ambattur zone, Ayapakkam recorded the highest rainfall of 134.1 mm in the last 24 hours, followed by Ambattur with 126.6 mm, and Anna Nagar West at 123.6 mm. Overall, the city experienced an average rainfall of 76.8 mm by Thursday morning.
The sudden downpour resulted in water stagnation in many areas, although drainage systems gradually cleared the excess water. Greater Chennai Corporation staff worked diligently to unclog drains and deployed motor pumps to assist low-lying areas.
Additionally, flooding impacted the Perambur High Road Subway and Villivakkam Subway, with the former temporarily closed but later cleared. Strong winds also uprooted nine trees, which were promptly removed by corporation staff.
