World Lung Day falls on 25th September and World Heart day falls on 29th September is known.
In commemoration of these 2 important days, to create awareness regarding heart and lung issues, Rela hospitals in Chennai has organised a walkathon of 5km and it has attracted over 500 participants including doctors and students.
The walkathon event was flagged by Mr. Pavan Kumar Reddy, DCP, Tambaram. Other important personalities who took part in the event were Dr. Illankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO Rela Hospitals, Dr. Srinath Vijayasekaran, director and senior consultant, Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Dr. Aishwarya Rajkumar, Clinical Lead, Transplant pulmonology, Rela Hospital etc.
There is an urgent need for the public to advocate for a cleaner environment and healthier lifestyles as they would be responsible for the diseases in humans. This was as per Dr. Illankumaran.
In India, air pollution has been responsible for about 1.7million deaths annually and this was mentioned by Dr. Aishwarya. She added that factors like poor air quality, smoking and occupational hazards were creating lung based issues in mane. On 29th September, Rela Hospitals would be organising a free heart and lung health camp.
It is now said that this upcoming camp would be open to those patients who have palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest or upper body pain, heartburns and swelling in the legs etc. The Point is that ECG, ECHO screening would also be carried out on the patients for health check-up. The cardiologist present at the camp would offer consultation to the public.
Information gathered is that the lung camp would be suitable for those with chronic cough, persistent mucus production, wheezing, coughing of blood etc. Lung check up would have a pulmonary function test and a pulmonologist would offer consultation for the patients.
