In a few days, Deepavali festival will be celebrated with huge happiness in Tamil Nadu and across India. People are now in deepavali festival mood now and they are spending time in purchases etc.
Yesterday, Ranganathan Street and Pondy Bazaar, an important shopping place for the residents, were brimming with people or overcrowded to buy clothes and household items etc. About 18000 police personnel were busy here yesterday. In the same way, other shopping places like Purrasawakkam, Washermenpet, Mylapore, Parry`s Corner and Thiruvanmiyur etc saw huge crowds.
This overcrowding was anticipated and Chennai police commissioner Mr. Arun has made some arrangements in advance. The security works have been divided into 3 parts that is crowd control, crime prevention and vehicle regulation to prevent traffic congestion.
In security and surveillance works, 18000 police personnel that includes law & order, crime branch, traffic control, armed forces, TN special police force and home guard police personnel etc.
To control traffic congestion, 17 temporary observatory towers were set up in T. Nagar, 3 in Washermenpet, 3 in Purasawalkam, and 4 in Pookadai etc.
Yesterday, there was a huge crowd at M.C. Road in Washermenpet in north Chennai. To avoid crimes, loud speakers were used for making announcements by the police personnel. In T. Nagar and Pondy Bazaar, police personnel distributed free scarfs to protect the women from losing their jewellery present around their necks. In T. Nagar and in Washermenpet, additional 42 surveillance cameras were installed.
