The Tamil Nadu segment of the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (BCE), a four-lane, access-controlled greenfield expressway, is expected to be completed by August 2025. The 105.7-km stretch traverses the districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, and Ranipet, significantly improving connectivity between Chennai and Bengaluru by reducing both travel time and distance.
Currently, around 65% of the work has been completed in Tamil Nadu. The 24.5-km segment from Walajapet to Arakkonam shows the most progress, with over 84% of work done, while the Arakkonam-Kancheepuram section lags behind, with approximately 52% completed. Other segments are also advancing, with 70% of the 24-km Gudipala-Walajapet stretch finished, and 64% of the 31.07-km Kancheepuram-Sriperumbudur package nearing completion.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) noted that, since this is a greenfield project, challenges related to land acquisition have been minimal, as the route primarily passes through open land. However, some delays arose from relocating electricity towers along the planned expressway.
The project, valued at ₹17,000 crore, will feature six toll plazas, 34 major bridges, and 31 minor bridges, covering a total bridge length of 15 km. The longest bridge will span 840 meters. Starting at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and ending at Gudipala in Andhra Pradesh, the expressway will streamline travel between Chennai and Bengaluru, benefiting both commuters and trade.
