Just 2 days have gone by since Cyclone Fengal made its landfall. The shocking piece of information is that GCC has collected more than 7000 metric tonnes of garbage and debris in Chennai in just 2days.
To clean the garbage and debris present in the city, additional workers have been employed by the GCC. Tree cutting machines are being used to cut trees that have fallen down in the cyclone. The corporation vehicles are being used to remove debris.
On Sunday alone in Chennai, more than 9000 sanitation workers 3942 MT of waste and 255.02 MT of construction waste. On Monday alone, 3680.03 MT of waste and construction debris were cleared. The cleaning works have been going at full speed now.
Point is that on 1st of December the highest amount of waste has been collected from the north Chennai based Royapuram (Zone 5) and it was 631.05 MT. This was as per the data from GCC.
Second highest amount of waste has been collected from the Teynampet (Zone 9) and it was 406.47 MT. It is sensational to mention that zero waste was collected from Manali (Zone 2). Zones like Tiruvottriyur and Madhavaram in north Chennai had the least amount of waste.
In Total, the GCC workers took as many as 560 trips to clear waste and transport it to places like Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumping grounds in Chennai. It is learnt that additionally from 6 zones in GCC, atleast 255.02 MT of waste has been removed. From the Kodambakkam zone present in south Chennai, 111.8 MT of waste was collected and shifted to landfill sites and processing plants.
All the parks that are within Chennai Corporation were shut down for precautionary measures due to cyclone Fengal is known. It must be taken into account that after the rains subsided in all the 871 parks cleaning activities were witnessed. The trees that have fallen and tree debris etc were removed from the parks by the workers of GCC.
It was mentioned by a senior official from Urbaser Sumit (a private contractor for SWM in Chennai) that water hyacinth and other vegetation that has been washed out (from Cooum near the Napier Bridge) to Marina Beach. He added that every day waste from the shores is being removed. He concluded that on Wednesday atleast 10 tonnes of wet waste would be present.
