Central Governments Initiative to Combat Cyber Crimes: New App to Enhance Security
In an effort to tackle the increasing number of cyber crimes in the country, the central government is developing a new application to enhance public safety and raise awareness. The government is also focusing on controlling crimes facilitated through smartphones by introducing this initiative.
Many cyber crimes, including those involving sensitive issues like sexual harassment, go unreported as victims hesitate to approach law enforcement. To address this, the National Cyber Security Research Council (NCSRC) has identified 24 types of cyber crimes, including digital extortion, crimes against women and children, illegal money transfers, and fraudulent activities related to drugs.
Key Highlights of the New Cyber Crime Initiatives:
1. Immediate Reporting of Cyber Crimes:
- Citizens are urged to report any cyber-related offenses immediately through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or by calling the helpline number 1930.
- The portal provides detailed explanations of the 24 types of cyber crimes to help people identify and report incidents effectively.
2. Protective Measures Against Online Scams:
- Caution is advised against clicking on suspicious links, such as those claiming to be from e-commerce platforms, as they may lead to financial loss.
- In case of a lost mobile phone, users must register their device’s IMEI number on the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal to prevent misuse.
3. Monitoring SIM Card Usage:
- By registering their Aadhaar number on the government’s Sanchar Sarathi portal, users can check the number of SIM cards issued in their name and deactivate any unauthorized connections.
4. Advanced Caller Identification System:
- To enhance public safety, the central government is implementing a new feature called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) in states like Haryana and Maharashtra, with plans to roll it out nationwide.
- This application will provide secure caller identification and protect users from fraudulent calls.
