Few years back, if we were told that the future summer season would start from the month of February itself in Chennai and across TN, then we would have considered it as a mere joke!!
It is worth mentioning here that unlike the previous years, now in February 2025 the temperature has increased by 2 degrees Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius above the normal already in Chennai and in many parts of TN. It is now believed that the summer season has begun in Chennai and in Tamil Nadu.
There has been a delay in the withdrawal of NE monsoon from TN this time and a weak winter. The reason cited for that was due to La Nina. In the coming days, the maximum temperature would increase by 4 degrees Celsius above normal. It is now said that the summer season this time could be hotter than in the past. This was revealed by some weather experts.
According to Mr. Senthamarai Kannan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, Chennai there has been no boosting mechanism or cloud formation that has led to the reduction in the moisture levels over the sea. Especially over the coastal and interior districts in TN, the temperature has increased in the state. Till 27th of February, the maximum temperature would be near normal or slightly above normal.
After the NE monsoon has withdrawn, the change in the wind flow pattern resulted in drastic reduction in the maximum temperature in February. This was especially during the early morning and in the nights. There was a late withdrawal of NEM this time because of La Nina effect is known.
Long term prediction for summer:
In this forthcoming summer season, there would not be an abnormal surge in the maximum temperatures. This was as per some weather experts. They have mentioned that the maximum temperature would be around 38 to 39 degrees Celsius just like the previous years, there would not be any unusual increase in March.
Not only the changes in the weather conditions are responsible for the surge in the temperature even before summer has asset in but also the climate changes. This was brought out by Professor Kurien Joseph, director, Centre for Climate Change and Natural Disaster Management, Anna University or AU, Chennai.
