The Tamil Nadu government is set to introduce a new parking policy in Chennai to reduce congestion and promote public transport. Developed by CUMTA, the policy covers 5,904 sq km, including Chennai, Tambaram, Avadi, and Kancheepuram.

- Centralized Management: A Parking Management Unit (PMU) under CUMTA will oversee fee collection and enforcement.

- Demand-Based Pricing: Fees will vary based on vehicle size, duration, location, and peak hours.

- Custom Parking Strategies: Different areas will have tailored parking plans and surge pricing.

- Freight Management: Truck terminals will be relocated to reduce on-street freight parking.

- Workplace & School Regulations: Offices with 100+ employees must encourage public transport; schools must have designated pick-up/drop zones.

- Commercial Parking: Multi-level parking and EV charging points will be introduced.

- Revenue Utilization: Funds from parking fees will improve footpaths, cycling tracks, and pedestrian safety.

This policy aims to ensure better mobility, safety, and organized parking across the city.
