Free dhotis and saris for Pongal to be distributed from today

The government will start distributing free dhotis and saris to the poor in the State from today. But it will take some time before all beneficiaries receive their garments. The distribution scheme has suffered because of severe power cuts that the weaving units faced in the past year.
Sources in the Department of Handlooms and Textiles said the garments would continue to be procured till February.Every year lakhs of beneficiaries who receive rice and other essentials through the public distribution system are eligible for dhotis and saris. The scheme was aimed at enabling them to celebrate the harvest festival.
Textiles Minister S. Sundararaj said at present 60 lakh saris were procured daily.
