The central resource centre for school students, EIDC, (Environmental Information Dissemination Centre) has opened a central resource for schools which are part of the National Green Corps (NGC).
The first centre is located at the Chennai Corporation Middle School at Choolai. 10 additional centres have already been set in other districts in the last academic year.
The students and teachers from NGC schools in the city can learn about environment-related topics such as pollution and energy conservation in 300 centres across the city.
The centre is equipped with a resource room with books, multimedia and a television. It can house up to 60 people. It also has a lab where teachers will be trained to use soil, water and air testing kits. The trained teachers, in turn, will train the students.
The centre will be open to Chennai Corporation, government, government-aided and private schools that are part of NGC. It will be a common meeting ground for environment-related activities.
Plans are under way to display models on rainwater harvesting, and set up a vermi-compost pit and medicinal plant garden on the premises.
