Dual drug for diabetes and bone disease

Here is a promising new element that is said to cure both diabetes and bone disease. Type-2 diabetes is in fact a condition closely related to bone fractures. This doubles the risk of fracture. Worsening matters, the risk gets further increased with the use of anti-diabetic drugs, especially in postmenopausal women, thus limiting their treatment options.

However, this new dual targeting drug called the SR10171 is possible to treat both bone disease as well as diabetes.

This drug SR1017 helps in improving bone mass, no matter what your body mass index is i.e whether you are obese or normal, said Patrick Griffin, a co-lead researcher at Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), US. Hence, this drug will be recommended for use for treating osteoporosis in diabetic patients.

This drug helps in increasing bone mass by expanding bone formation which means deposition of new bone, and bone turnover which is the replacement of old bone. Both these process need to be well balanced in order to maintain the bone healthy. In most cases of diabetics, this balance is lagging.

When this compound was used to treat animal models, it was possible to block the bone marrow, claims reports published online in EbioMedicine.
