The jaw pain in us could be due to these reasons

The term Jaw refers to any opposable articulate structure present at the entrance of the mouth. It is known that jaw is used for grasping and manipulating food. Sometimes we could feel pain in the jaws.  It is said that teeth grinding and clenching experienced during sleep could be responsible for the jaw pain in us. The pain in our jaws could be due to other causes also. It is essential to seek the doctor’s advice when we get jaw pain for longer periods of time.

These are the different causes that could create jaw pain in us.

TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder:

The joint that connects the jawbones to the skull is affected by the TMD or temporomandibular disorder. Persons having this issue would have limited movements of his or her jaws plus would also have high pain. One important point here is this issue would not be life threatening but it could affect the quality of life. Studies have shown that one in every eight persons has this TMD and women get affected by this issue more than men.

Grinding of teeth during sleeping:

Usually people do teeth grinding when they are awake. There are some who do this while sleeping and this could lead to jaw pain in them. It is said that this grinding of teeth is due to various genetic, physical and psychological factors. People having stress, people with Parkinson’s disease etc could grind their teeth leading to teeth damage and jaw pain.

Gum disease:

Not many are aware that gum disease could also lead to severe jaw pain. There are many reasons for the gum diseases and they are smoking, poor oral health plus hormonal changes etc. It is known that gum disease is infection of bones and tissues surrounding the teeth. It is brought out that the pain could spread to the jaw portion and could cause severe jaw pain.

Sinus infections etc:

Pain in the jaws could also be due to sinus infections, colds, allergies etc. It is worthy to note that ruling out sinuses could involve anything from referring to physician, waiting for the cold to get over etc.

Trauma:

The jaw could also be broken or removed from its place like bone when the jaw faces severe blow.  Bruises, swelling, jaw pain etc are caused because of the blow.

Heart attack:

Many people don’t know that jaw pain could also be due serious issues like heart attack etc. It is said that the pain that starts near the heart could be felt at some other place in the body. This is termed as referred pain. Pain in the jaws could also be the only sign of heart attack in some persons.

Certain diseases:

Certain diseases like mumps, tetanus etc could also be responsible for the jaw pain in us. Viral infection causes mumps in us and glands on the sides of mouth get swollen. It results in jaw pain. Tetanus is due to bacterial infection and jaw muscles would become stiff or tight causing jaw pain.
