More about multivitamins

There is a lot of debate about the need for vitamin supplements for children. While one school of thought says that it is not needed as long as kids get a balanced diet, another says that extra vitamins are needed no matter what. Here are a few things to keep in mind before making a decision for your child.

No amount of supplements can make up for a balanced diet. A child needs to have healthy, fresh food loaded with nutrients. However, with today’s busy schedules, getting a proper meal together is a herculean task. Assess your child’s diet and supplement accordingly. Unfortunately, today’s food is grown on nutrient deficient soil. Even animals are fed nutrient deficient foods. So the need for supplements increases.

Those who are against supplements argue vitamin toxicity. This is the excess intake of vitamins. However, experts say that although this is possible, it is extremely rare. It is best to take a multivitamin that provides no more than 50 percent of adult RDA. Once your child reaches 12 years of age, he or she may be given an adult dosage. However, all intake must be prescribed by your physician.
