11 in 43 stroke patients are youngsters, an alarming report

Consultant neurologist and epileptologist Dr Dinesh Nayak has alarming news for the youngsters. Most youngsters are in a misconception that stroke can affect only the elderly, but this is not the case in reality. Youngsters are prone to stroke too.
 
Giving a few words at a program organized at Fortis Malar Hospital for World Stroke Day on October 29, the doctor said their hospital saw 43 patients with stroke last year. Out of this count, 11 of them were youngsters. He stressed the point that diet, smoking, alcohol and obesity are the primitive reasons for stroke.
 
According to recent reports, stroke started affecting Indian youngsters a decade earlier than it eyed on youngsters in UK, Europe and the US. Considering Chennai, there are over 100 cases of stroke every day.
 
Stroke occurs when a person’s brain stops receiving blood supply due to a clot or rupture in the blood vessel. This is termed as hemorrhagic stroke. Out of the total stroke cases, 87 per cent are ischemic in nature, and most of these are treatable. In cases of stroke, once it attacks your body, 32,000 brain cells fall dead each and every second.
