Stone and inflammation in pancreas is mainly due to alcohol. However, interestingly, when a 20 ml of it is injected into the nerve, it’s possible for you to avoid recurrence of pain post-surgery.

Rajiv Gandhi government hospital conducted a study recently and this involved analyzing 66 patients. It was found that nerve fibres carrying pain sensation around pancreas can be killed out by injecting alcohol in nerves around the pancreas.

About 20 per cent of patients experienced pain despite surgery. The success rate is found to be 97 per cent in this new method when compared to that of 82 per cent with surgical procedure.

Speaking about this, head of surgical gastroenterology says this method is also helpful in increasing the food intake in patients which helps them gain weight. In surgery, the diseased tissue is removed from the pancreas along with stones inside. However, the nerves around it will keep getting irritated, which can be cured by injecting alcohol, he says.

It is also to be noted that not all patients undergo surgery for stones in pancreatic duct. Surgical procedure is recommended for those who have unbearable and persistent pain. As per observation, patients belonging to age between 31 and 40 are largely affected by this.
