According to a new study, it is said that consumption of food rich in walnut will help extend life span, as it considerably reduces the growth of colon cancer.
Recently, an animal study was conducted by the Harvard Medical School under the lead of Dr. Christos Mantzoros. The reports of the study state that consumption of walnut rich food will slow down growth of colorectal tumor growth which is achieved by making changes in cancer genes. This study is first of its kind in figuring out the possibility of making changes in micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA) which are the nucleotides involved in altering gene expression.
Speaking about it, Dr. Mantzoros said the nut makes significant change in expression profile of miRNAs in the localized colorectal cancer tissue. He also added that future studies are required. They are optimistic of the part played by miRNAs as biomarkers of disease and prognosis which will be a potential therapeutic target for treatment of colorectal cancer. It was also found that greater percentage of omega-3s in tumor tissues were found in case of smaller tumor size. ALA is believed to provide a protective benefit.
